It's Good for Kids to Talk to Themselves!
Did you know that preschoolers do better when they talk to themselves?
A recent study shows that 5 year olds do better on motor tasks when they talk out loud to themselves than when they are silent. It is a form of private speech that is perfectly normal among children between 2 and 5, helps them make the transition between talking to themselves and talking to others.
In fact, children with behavior problems ( like ADHD and ADD) tend to talk to themselves a great deal and while this situation might be a source of concern to teachers who prefer kids to be silent, it is actually quite beneficial to the children involved. Private speech helps children develop.
